About

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy maintains that by producing cattle that we take pride in while regenerating grasslands along with good people, we can grow a healthy lifestyle in step with nature.  A healthy lifestyle in step with nature is something we aspire to attain on a personal level and in the way we manage our cattle. Through management we sync the nutrition requirements of our cattle's production cycle and when those nutrition resources are naturally available in season. Our health approach is the same in our personal life as with our cattle; by focusing on a robust immune system through nutrition rather than vaccines and other synthetic inputs.

We imagine that a cow's utopia would be similar to ours and include migrating south with available forage and warmer weather during winter time. Since it is not feasible for either of us to do that, we make sure that our cow's nutrition requirements are at the lowest during winter when protein is provided through supplemental hay or bale grazing.

Being in step for us also means the majority of the physical work load takes place in the summer when the days are longer and it's enjoyable to be outdoors. During winter we have more time to be with our friends, make good food, and work on our business. The same goes for the cows, they calve in the nicest part of Spring at the same time animals in the wild do.

Our Story

We are Ryan and Jessica Jarratt and we run a grass-based cattle operation in Bismarck, ND. We have a particular appreciation for Western Wheatgrass – not only does it represent quality forage that is so vital to the development of our cattle, but because it’s the state grass of both North Dakota and Wyoming, two states where we have roots. We met in western Wyoming in 2014 where Ryan was managing a seedstock cattle operation in Star Valley and Jessica was working on a ranch north of Jackson Hole.

Ryan has always had a passion for cattle and being in nature.  At age 11, with advice from a mentor and a loan from his dad, he bought his first registered Salers cow. He went to college in North Dakota where he met some lifelong friends.

In 2018, we took a small herd of cattle from Wyoming to North Dakota and now run them in collaboration with some of those good friends from college at Brown’s Ranch where we share similar goals and combined resources focusing on regenerative grazing and grass-finishing cattle. In addition to ranching, Jessica manages a horse barn near Bismarck, and Ryan works in his dad’s construction business.

At the end of the day, we value strong relationships, good food, healthy landscapes, and content cattle. We respect how deeply interconnected all of these things are – and we’ve built our operation around that truth
