About

Jarratt Cattle Co.

Grass Finished

At Jarratt Cattle Company, we are selecting for cattle capable of finishing on grass. The end product needs to be tender and flavorful and being profitable is important. Heifers have been the best at meeting these requirements for us, especially young cows that have fallen out of the breeding stock part of the program. Ultimately, we are striving for the genetics that we breed to result in quality beef and profitability when provided with nutrition resources available in perennial pastures.

Our philosophy maintains that by raising products that we take pride in, that result in good food and with people we enjoy; we can grow a healthy lifestyle in synch with nature. A healthy lifestyle in sync with nature is something we aspire to attain on a personal level and in the way we manage our cattle. Through management we sync the nutrition requirements of our cattle's production cycle and when those nutrition resources are naturally available in season. Our health approach is the same in our personal life as with our cattle; by focusing on a robust immune system through nutrition rather than vaccines and other synthetic inputs. I imagine that our cow's utopia would be similar to ours and include migrating south with available forage and warmer weather during winter time. Since it is not feasible for either of us to do that, we make sure that our cow's nutrition requirements are at the lowest during winter when hay is provided. Being in sync for us also means the majority of the physical work load takes place in the summer when the days are longer and it's enjoyable to be outdoors. During winter we have more time to sit around and eat good food with our friends. The same goes for the cows, they calve in the nicest part of Spring when their production cycle is in sync with nature. Another aspect of our approach to a healthy lifestyle is to work with people we like. We are able to run our cows in collaboration with our friends at Brown's Ranch where we share similar goals and combined resources.

The Brand

With a degree in economics and a passion for the cattle business, Ryan looked to create a logo that combined a few core aspects of Jarratt Cattle Company. He started playing with a free style app on his phone to depict what he envisioned. He may have nerded out with the result. The logo represents a Western Wheatgrass plant overall including the roots and what is beneath the soil surface. This logo characterizes the quality forage that is so vital to the development of grass based cattle. The leaf and root portion also stands for the importance of profitable economics with a supply and demand curve where the culm leading to the seed head rises out of it's equilibrium point.  An unforeseen quality of this logo is when turned upside down, it makes Ryan think of palm trees and beautiful weather.

The skeleton of our grass plant logo is also forms the brand carried by all of our cattle.

For the Love of Beef

As described above, the Jarratt Cattle Company logo represents a Western Wheatgrass plant. Western Wheatgrass also happens to be the state grass of both North Dakota and Wyoming. Ryan and Jessica Jarratt have roots in both of those States. They met in western Wyoming while Ryan was managing a seedstock cattle ranch and Jessica was working on a ranch north of Jackson Hole.

Ryan has always had a passion for cattle and being outdoors. He bought his first registered Salers cow looking to the advice of one of his heros and a loan from his Dad at 11 years old in 1998. Ryan went to college in North Dakota where he met some good friends.

Ryan and Jessica moved back to North Dakota in 2018 with a small herd of cattle and run them in collaboration with their friends at Brown's Ranch. In addition to ranching, Jessica manages a horse barn near Bismarck and Ryan works in his Dad's construction business.

Ryan and Jessica value relationships and good food. Content cattle make them happy. They enjoy healthy landscapes. They respect how all these things are related. They ranch for the love of beef.
